I graduated from business school in 1986 with a nifty degree and the type of attitude that only advanced education can foster.

The reality was that I knew nothing and learned more in the first two months as a marketing manager for a top 20 Boston law firm than I discovered in six years of higher education. Really. First up was learning to take on professional debaters. I also learned how to sell, negotiate, cajole, tease, budget, lobby, persevere, ignore, make friends, risk everything and dodge bullets. That education continues to this day and has shaped up into the work-in-progress resume that follows.

Joe is a life-long professional services marketer who got his start in the field in 1987. He offers clients a wealth of sophisticated brand positioning, market research, creative development and media planning skills.

Based near Boston, he is a principal and creative director with Greenfield/Belser Ltd., working with marketing-challenged clients of all shapes and sizes, inside the professional services sector and out.

Before joining Greenfield/Belser in 2002, he was Andersen’s global creative director—managing an in-house creative team, outside agencies and a $100 million global branding budget. Joe was one of only a handful of firm partners who was not a consulting, accounting or tax professional. In 10 years at Andersen, Joe was an industry marketing manager, an office and regional marketing director, a national marketing leader, and, at the end of the line, a global brand manager.

Prior to joining Andersen, Joe was the marketing director for Warner & Stackpole in Boston, an 80-lawyer firm that later merged with a large national law firm. Joe created a comprehensive marketing strategy, including market research, service improvement programs, database development, promotion and targeted marketing—all then new in law firm marketing—that positioned the Boston-based firm to prosper in a period of intense legal-industry competition.

When Joe is not working, he particularly enjoys Patty, Cole, Emma and Maeve; tailgating at Patriot games; yard work at his home in Falmouth, Maine, and listening to the Red Sox on the radio.

BORN:

Winthrop, Massachusetts (near runway 9, Logan Airport)

I GREW UP IN:

my early thirties.

EDUCATION:

B.A., English; M.B.A., Marketing

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

Life-long professional services marketer. Started and spent six great years with mid-sized Boston law firm, moved to Andersen for another eight in various local, regional, and national marketing roles. Promoted to partner and global creative director for Andersen marketing in 2001, ten months before the Andersen world came apart. Living happily ever after at Greenfield/Belser.

WHEN I'M NOT WORKING, I PARTICULARLY ENJOY:

Patty, Cole, Emma and Maeve. Tailgating at Patriots games. Yard work. Listening to the Red Sox on the radio (this is the year).
